My word of advice would be learn a few phrases in the native language, avoid cultural faux pas, read the Lonely Planet or the Bradt guide - get to know the place the country you're visiting by doing some research prior to your trip. These guide books often have some good travel tips and warnings. And, who knows, you might meet a fellow traveler at a local internet cafe or a local at a nearby restaurant. My best travel experiences have been those where I've gotten to know the place I visit through locals whether it's staying with a host family or meeting someone through a project.
On another note, I can't wait for his book "Half the Sky" on women's empowerment in developing countries to be published in September 2009.
